Arsenal's press triggers: where Spurs lost the midfield battle
Arteta set three distinct press cues. Postecoglou's response in the first 15 minutes explained the final scoreline.
The 2-1 scoreline was decided in three moments during the opening 15 minutes. This is the film study we wrote up after the match.
Trigger 1: the wide centre-back
Arsenal set up with a wide centre-back pushing into the midfield on the left. The trigger was the Spurs right-back's first touch. Spurs's predictable wide pass gave Arsenal a numerical advantage in the middle third.
Trigger 2: the inverted full-back
The right-back inverted into the No. 6 position whenever Spurs committed a wing-back high. Spurs responded by switching the play; Arsenal's second pass cut the switch.
Trigger 3: the central midfielder drop
When Spurs circulated the ball back to their centre-backs, Arsenal's No. 6 pressed their No. 8, leaving a 2v2 in front of the Spurs backline. The result was a turnover inside six seconds on three of the first five backpasses.
Spurs's response
Postecoglou switched to a back-five at half-time, with the wing-backs dropping to overlap the full-backs. This changed the press triggers; Arsenal's wide centre-back no longer had a clean cue. The tactical adjustment explained the second-half Spurs improvement.
Implications
The triggers are replicable against Spurs's shape but not against a back-five. Expect Arteta to vary the cues against different opponents; the desk will publish the next match's expected setup on Friday.
