A Wankhede pitch report that re-writes Sunday's final
Our pitch consultant walked the Wankhede strip on Saturday evening. The grass, the cracks, the slope, and what that means for captaincy calls at the toss.
Saturday afternoon. The Wankhede strip is green to within ten yards of the crease, with the latest cutting done only that morning. The cracks that opened mid-tournament have closed; the slope from the north end is still present but less pronounced than in 2025.
Our consultant calls it a 168-172 first-innings pitch, with the second-innings chase a touch easier if the surface holds. The dew factor is high (0.62 on our model), so chasing is the expected call.
What this means for the captain's toss: bat first is a marginal preference if the dew lands early; field first if the captain trusts the bowling depth more than the batting cushion. The decision usually splits on whether the captain favours seam or spin.
The grass
Seven mm of live grass across the strip, with bowlers' footmarks already visible mid-length. Seamers will extract modest lateral movement for the first six overs; spinners from over the wicket will get bounce variation from the eighth over.
The cracks
Closed now, but the curator admitted that late-innings dryness could reopen them by the 17th over. Any spinner with good drift will be rewarded late in the second innings.
The slope
Two degrees from north to south end. Right-arm bowlers from the south end get a slight angle that disappears by the point-of-release. Left-arm spin from the north end is harder to sweep than the length suggests.
The dew
Humidity 78% at the 7 pm forecast call. Ground staff expect dew to land from the 11th over of the second innings. Sub-fielding sides are reminded to towel the ball at every changeover.
The captain's call
Most captains prefer to chase in these conditions. Our model says bat-first is favoured by 0.6 percentage points once dew is fully factored in. The captain who trusts spin more than seam may choose to bat first; the captain who trusts seam should field first.
Squad impact
Three seam-bowling allrounders and two wrist-spinners. Hardik Pandya and Marcus Stoinis are the only bowlers who can land a slow cutter or a leg-spinner's wrong-one on this surface with confidence. They are likely to operate six overs between them.
Fantasy angle
Pick captaincy choices that maximise ceiling rather than consistency. A wrist-spinner with strong lower-order batting is the cleanest differential. A pinch-hitter used at No. 4 or No. 5 is the second cleanest.
Final-day timeline
Toss at 6:30 pm IST. First ball 7 pm. The match is expected to finish at 10:30 pm IST, with rain unlikely.
