How to read a cricket pitch in ninety seconds
The cracks, the grass, the slope - a field-side walk-through our pitch consultant uses before every match. With practice, ninety seconds is enough.
Reading a pitch is faster than people think. A trained eye can gather the decisive inputs in ninety seconds if the four checks below are run in order.
First - stand where you are
You will get the widest visual context by standing at mid-pitch, square of the wicket, looking down the length. You are looking for three things: the colour (green vs. dry), the live grass cover, and the footmarks at either end.
Second - the grass
Live grass on a subcontinent pitch means the curator is leaving seam movement on for the early overs. Seven mm or more is significant; less than five mm and seam movement is likely to be small. The grass cover is most informative on the south end (or whichever end gets the morning sun in winter).
Third - the cracks
Cracks tell you what the spinner will get in the second innings. Tiny surface cracks that close after watering will reopen by the 17th over in dry weather. Wide cracks that already run the length of the strip mean uneven bounce is on the menu.
Fourth - the slope
A two-degree slope is enough to disturb a fast bowler who has not bowled to the slope before. Players who have prepared for the slope (most international bowlers) will look more comfortable than those who have not.
Fifth - the corner test
Walk to either end and look back at where the bowler will release. If the seam bowler can find a consistent spot, the pitch is doing what the curator expects. If the bounce is variable, prepare for surprises.
The limits
No method reads the weather. Dew factor, wind direction and evening temperature all change in the second innings. Our model uses the field-side read as one input; the weather is the other.
Using it on matchday
Captains reading the pitch in the nets are looking for what the bowlers are doing, not what the pitch is doing. The captain who trusts the pitch more than the bowler is the one whose team adjusts to the bowlers' workload first.
